After having to hold onto their love against a hostile world, Pedro Baró would still get the hardest strike: the early demise of his dearest lover.
The devastated widower commissioned French artist René Lalique for the building of a mausoleum worthy enough to match Catalina's loving memory. He spared no expenses, spending up to one million gold pesos on it.
With a distinctive shape and an igloo-like whiteness -rendered by Italian marble from Bergamo-, it stands out amid all the other tombs and pantheons nearby.
A double door made of black glass -worked with acid by René Lalique himself- seals the mortuory chamber in which Catalina Lasa was buried with all her best jewels on, in the manner of an Egyptian pharaoh. Her sarcophagus was also coated with tons of concrete to avoid looting.
Despite it all, the mausoleum was eventually pillaged, with the tombs vandalized and the beautiful glazed screen that once stood inside now gone forever.
A renovation of the site has been planned ever since, but yet to no avail.
